Why are so many people convinced that we need the government to do everything for us?

Have you been to Mexico, I mean real Mexico, not Cancun or one of the resorts. Mexico is a true Republic, if you have money you can get a service, like school for your children. Not all social programs are bad, they just need good management. What if we privatized the police? and you called needing help and they decided you crime wasn't profitable enough, you would need government then wouldn't you?
